In two days, I will be on a plane to San Francisco for my first real vacation in five years...my first vacation since my honeymoon...since getting pregnant and having kids and becoming a frantic, exhausted working away from home mom. One whole week with no kids, just husband.
So, if you've been and have a favorite place to visit - I need suggestions! I need direction. Favorite yarn stores, favorite restaurants, favorite scenic spots...I need it all. If I don't have a plan, I may very well stay in bed all day with Dean and while that is COMPLETELY worthwhile, I don't see why we should travel across the country to do it. OK, maybe we'll do it one day. But that leaves 5 days left to fill.
Whaddaya got for me??

I miss SF. *sniff sniff*. Lived there for 8 years before moving to CT. Definitely walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. The new DeYoung Museum in the park is supposed to be amazing. Go to the Palace of the Legion of Honor--the view from there is amazing even if you don't visit the museum. Coit tower is another great place for views, less congested (and IMHO better) at night. If you have any interest in Alcatraz, book tickets online NOW. Kabuki Springs is a spa that also has traditional Japanese communal baths and it is co-ed (swimsuit required) on Tuesday, or women only Sun/W/F (men only M/Th/Sat). I used to go there a lot to relax and rejuvinate, and only $20 during the week, stay as long as you want. Sunset at Ocean Beach is always lovely and The Cliff House (newly rebuilt) is at the north end, The Beach Chalet at the west end of the park. Both are restaurants with great views and atmosphere.
There are a few things off the top of my head. Have a fabulous time!
Check out the Buena Vista at the south end of Fisherman's Wharf where the Powell streetcar turns around. The home of Irish Coffee and great omelettes. Enjoy -I wish I were there right now!
i love SF but i've never been long enough to actually do anything other than take cable cars and explore my general area on foot. so i can't recommend anything in particular. just have a wonderful time. you guys deserve it.
whatever you do, have fun!
it's so great you're getting to do this, and SF is a wonderful destination (although i can't for the life of me what i did/see there at all)
I've never been there, so no advice, but I hope you have a fantastic time!!
I'm seriously bummed that I can't get out to see you. You'll only be 3 hours away. Gah.
But! Have a phenomenal, fantastic vacation and enjoy every single second!
Spend some time in Golden Gate Park, go to Caffe Trieste in North Beach for amazing biscotti, coffee, and espresso, and definitely visit City Lights Books.
If you make it down to Haight/Ashbury, have a pint at Mad Dog in the Fog and spend some time at Amoeba Records (one of the best record stores ever) or Rasputin Records (another one of the best ever).
xoxo
Artfibers is my favorite yarn store ever. It's in the financial district near Union Square and Chinatown, but accessible by BART, too. Highly recommended! www.artfibers.com
I also liked Sam Wo restaurant in Chinatown - cheap, authentic food, and open until 4 AM! You enter through the kitchen and go upstairs to the dining room.
Have fun - I love that city!
I was just in San Fran, but WITH kids. But I have spent time in Berkeley without kids, so if you have time to go across the bridge, just spend some time strolling down Shattuck Ave and looking in the fun stores and cafes. Its a nice place to amble.
You have to see Lombard Street (world's crookedest street), Fisherman's Wharf for seafood, if you're the lucky the sea lion's might be laying around. Definitely Chinatown and at night the cable cars park on certain streets so you'll be able to pose for a cool cable car picture. Have a wonderful trip - I love read your blog.
There's many things I love in San Francisco. Food: Fringale, Le Colonial, the farmer's market at the Ferry Building. Shalimar for hole-in-the-wall excellent Indian. Chowhound has lots to say about SF.
Art: De Young and SFMOMA, or just go into galleries around Maiden Lane.
Other: Lindy in the Park on Sundays.
Have fun if you catch this response in time!
Artfibers! Like no other yarn store you've ever been in.
The biggest surprise for me when we went a few years ago was Sausalito. It's just over the Golden Gate bridge, so if you have access to a car, I'd *highly* recommend the short drive to this beautiful bayside community. It was like something out of a movie. Great walking around and lots of waterside restaurants.
Have a great time!! Even if you do nothing but hang in the hotel for a week, I'm sure it's going to be wonderful for you guys to be away together :)
Hey Miss,
Believe it or not, while "touristy," the City Lights bookstore (of Jack Kerouac fame) and the bar right next door (where he used to write and drink, no doubt) are pretty cool. The bar is pub-like and cozy and the store is great.
Also, Berkeley was a favorite visit of mine. TONS of great little eateries serving REAL smoothies and fresh, organic foods.
Have fun!
