homeowner

It's weird, I don't feel like a homeowner. Of course, I'm not living in our new house yet, and that probably makes all the difference. Even though the house was pretty much in move-in condition, we want to paint all of the rooms. So this weekend, we paint. Next weekend, we move.

The closing went really well. Our lawyer is a friend, and the same guy who married us, so we felt like he had our best interests at heart. The sellers are already out of state, so they weren't there at all. Their lawyer was there for maybe 10 minutes, to sign some stuff and take some money. The whole thing was over in an hour and a half.

Want to know the thing that has totally knocked me off guard about this whole thing?

Last night our neighbor came over to tell me that that afternoon there was a brown bear in our yard; and that it wasn't the first time she'd seen one in the neighborhood.

Um.

WHAT???

Now, we live in the country, in an area where there has been quite a bit of forest destruction in the name of housing, and there are bears. I knew that. I just hadn't really been thinking about it...and there have been numerous bear sightings in these parts over the past few years. But my yard??? I probably don't have to tell you that I was awake all night with thoughts of my family being mauled. I'm not sure I'll ever be perfectly at ease sitting in my back yard.

I told Dean this morning and his response was "awesome!"

????

So yeah. I don't even know what to do with that. I guess just try and put it out of my mind and think that they are supposedly more afraid of us. That's what my neighbor said anyway, and she was IN the yard when she saw the bear.

They are totally more afraid of you. I'd say invest in some good trash cans and be careful about not leaving food outside overnight. And of course, watch those babies!!

I think Mia's giving you good advice. Don't leave food outside overnight (not that you would anyway).

Also - you might want to chat with Mamacate. She has had bears in her yard, too.

Mamacate has a bear come 'round her house. She took videos.

I live in a developed area, but there's a mountain at the end of the street and bears often wander through en route. They seem to be most active very early in the morning -- right before dawn. We bring in the bird feeders at night and no one in the neighborhood has had a problem in the 16 years I've lived here.

holy crap! but i'm a bit like dean -- "awesome"

Congrats on the house!!! I think the bears are cool, too.

My grandmother in northern MN gets bears wandering through her yard every year. She keeps her trash cans in the garage until the morning of pick up, but she's never had problems with the bird feeder. As long as Mama doesn't feel she or her cubs are threatened, it will be cool.

When I was in Whistler we used to have bears come around all the time, we even had one in our house. They're actually fairly skittish. Don't leave out garbage (a garbage bear is a dead bear), don't surprise them and you'll be fine. They're mostly just stinky and drooly and looking for bugs.

First, yay!! A house. I can wait to see it.

As for the bears, here's a link with some "what to do" tips, like make noise so the bear knows you're there and all that.

It looks like it was probably a black bear. Turns out they come in brown, too. Actual Brown Bears live in Alaska and the northwest.

Can you tell I was concerned? I bet your local town hall will have all the info you'll need to deal with them.

Pretty cool, kinda scary. As soon as I read your post, I thought of MamaCate's post about her bears. Definitley talk to her.

But Yay!! House!

house with bear?!
too cool! congratulations!

(sorry people, wildlife biologist here). yes, black bear most likely, very shy, not a problem.

good luck with painting and moving in!

It probably went in your yard because there hasn't been much activity in the house in a while. I bet if you follow all the advice everyone gave you, your family will be just fine and you will occasionally get to show the babies some amazing wildlife from the comfort of your living room. (Can you tell bears aren't my paranoia with respect to my kid? Mine's water.)

Congratulations! I've been in my house for over six months now and I'm *just* starting to feel like a homeowner.

As for the bear... build a fence? I big, giant fence?

Congrats on becoming a homeowner! For someone removed from the situation, the bears sound cool. However, as a parent (and a somewhat scaredy-cat), I would be freaking out. I'm sure everything will be fine!

Hoooray!!!!!!!

Congratulations! Homeownership can be very, very fun. Really, there's only one day a month when owning a home is No Fun At All, and it goes by pretty quickly. ;)

As for me, I'm looking forward to lots of bear footage. And Elisa is right, you should chat w/Cate. Her bears seem to come back every year.

Congrats on the home ownership. It's good to be a little afraid of the bears - they are wild after all. Yes, they are more afraid of you.
